Adventurer's Passion: Odyssey by Gaslight

Adventurer's Passion: Odyssey by Gaslight

Sam strolled down the streets of Tokyo, a large hat casting his face into shadow, concealing the scars that covered it. At his side his son. The boy walking beside him wasn't related to him by blood, but he was his son and he loved him dearly. This was the fifth time time they'd been to Japan in as many years. They were looking for someone, a person he'd lost years ago, someone he thought he'd never see again. He honestly wasn't sure if he could find her but he couldn't give up they had to keep looking he needed to find her, no matter how long it took or how far he had to go.

He'd wandered the world, searching, but he always came back to Japan something kept drawing him back no matter how many times he failed to find her hear. Still, the couldn't stay much longer, they had had a few run-ins with the local mafia and while he wouldn't let them stop him, no matter how many they sent after him. But he didn't want anyone to get hurt, and the more trouble they got into the more likely it was they would get someone hurt.

John followed closely after his father, his dark eyes scanning the crowd around them. Gone was the gaunt, almost skeletal young boy. He had grown a bit taller, a couple inches shorter than his father. His dark hair had grown long and shaggy, often falling over his face so he had to reach up and push it away again. Though he was a lot healthier than he had been, he was still thin, though it was a lithe, wiry thin. There was also a bit more confidence in his step. It had been a long road, but he had been determined to help his father find HER, the only woman he had truly ever loved. Her death, precipitated by the death of the child in her womb, had destroyed the family. She had wasted away, and Sam hadn't been able to save her. But then SHE had come... Raina, the child that had survived in another universe. And she had turned their world upside down.

The girl had gotten him out of bed, had given him a new purpose. She had sworn that there was someone out there for him. He wasn't sure about that... after all, his counterpart in that other universe was marrying Raina... there was no Raina here for him. So he had thrown himself into helping his father finding Min. Raina had helped them realize that her soul would one day be reborn. They kept coming back to Japan; Sam felt that he would find her here. John followed; he'd do anything for Sam.

As the two moved through the crowd, they were being watched carefully by a pair of bottomless dark eyes. A small shape moved through the throng of people toward the older man. The young girl thought he'd have more money. She seemed to know how to blend, no one noticing the dark-haired urchin. Once she had gotten close, she could see the man's face more clearly. The scars made her sad, though she couldn't have said why and a sudden feeling of familiarity hit her. She shook it off, knowing she needed the money. She hadn't eaten in two weeks and her thin frame showed it. Plus, she knew her own cut would be tiny. Perhaps, if there was enough money, she could try to keep a bit for herself... She ducked close to the man and reached into his pocket with the aplomb and skill of a veteran pick-pocket.

Sam's hand snapped out and seized her by the wrist. "The last person who picked my pocket got their hand bitten off by what was inside," he said, "trust me, this pocket is more trouble than-" he turned and his eyes widened, he froze his face filling with shock his grip on her wrist loosening. She was just a street child, filthy and dressed in a ragged scrap of cloth, nothing special, nothing he'd never seen before. But her eyes, they were HER eyes, a set of eyes so dark and so deep he thought he could get lost in them forever. There were a hundred things he could have done, could have said. But he just stood there, unable to move, his mouth dry, the powers of speech suddenly abandoning him. For a long moment they just stared at each other, a thousand thoughts racing through his head.

Then she jerked away, his wallet in her hand, he didn't care about the money, she could have it. But she was getting away, he was losing her again. He couldn't let that happen, not again, never again. He started running, it didn't matter that the street was crowded and he was working against the tide, he didn't let anything get in his way, shoving and knocking over anyone or anything that got in his way. Nothing would stand between him and reuniting with her he didn't care what he had to do.

John had been oblivious to the street urchin until Sam had grabbed the hand that had gone into his pocket. He didn't seem surprised; this was a bit of a common occurrence. He was used to his father being not quite normal. After all, he wasn't normal either. He figured Sam would do what he normally did when something like this happened; he'd give the child a scolding, then give them a bit of money so they could get food. With a stern warning, then he'd let them go. But this time... his father could only stare, giving the little thief ample time to bolt away. Then Sam was off after the girl.

"Papa!" John shouted, running after him, or trying to anyway. The crowd was thick. But that didn't stop him from seeing the trio of thugs that were headed their way. And now, Sam's mad dash through the crowd was drawing their attention. "Papa! Look out!" he shouted desperately. There was nothing he could do in the crowd, not without hurting, or more likely, killing some innocent bystander. He could only hope his father heard him.

John's words registered at the back of his mind but he ignored them, he didn't care nothing mattered but catching up to the girl, seeing those eyes again. So he plowed on, desperation fueling his sprint, long legs bringing him closer and closer to his quarry. But still he demanded more, nothing was more important than catching up to her, nothing, so he pushed himself to greater and greater lengths ignoring his body's complaints.

The girl ran through the crowd, shooting panicked glances over her shoulder. The man was coming after her! And he was gaining on her! There was something about him... the way he had looked at her... She couldn't get it out of her head. She wasn't a stranger to the way that grown men often looked at a young girl like her. But this had been different. There had been a multitude of emotions in his eyes, in his expression. The first had been shock and disbelief. Then had come recognition and with that, a profound sadness. But the emotion she couldn't quite place had been what had come after... She shuddered, unsure what was going on, because at the same time, recognition had flared in her. But she had no idea who he was!

She looked back again and swore viciously when she saw the three men that were in pursuit. She recognized them all too well. They were Yakuza goons. And they seemed to be after the two men. Min wanted to ignore it, wanted to just disappear... but something tugged at her. Plus, anyone who was an enemy of the Yakuza was an ally of hers. Making sure the man behind her saw where she ducked into, she seemed to disappear into a side alley, hoping she knew what she was doing...

He panicked when he lost sight of her, knowing she'd disappear on him if he let her. He darted after her, dodging into the alley, and locking his eyes on her once again. "Wait!" he shouted, "please wait!" He was gasping and panting but he didn't dare stop running, he had to reach her, he needed to reach her. So he kept running, continued his mad dash, unable to risk her getting away from him.

She seemed to disappear out of sight for a bit, in the shadows of the alley. As Sam came into the alley, followed closely by John and then the three Yakuza ran in a few moments later. Min jerked her head to Sam, trying to get him to follow her into the dark. There was a grate back in the shadows that led into the sewers. But she had to get rid of their pursuers first, she knew. She darted back into the shadows, only to emerge next to the three men, a small dagger flashing out as she cut their belts... their pants then fell around their ankles as she dashed away, giggling exaggeratedly, trying to draw them after her.

Sam was in front of the men in an instant, a wall between them and the little girl, a gun appearing in his hand as if from nowhere. His gaze was hard as stone, but there was something else there, a rage burning in the depths of his eyes. And as they felt it boring into them the men began to shuffle and back away from him drawing up defensively. He took a step forward and they shrank back. "Run," he growled, and they did tripping and falling over each other none of them wanting to be the last in his presence.

John stood next to his father, ready to fight. But then Sam had stepped forward, getting between the girl and the men. John's own eyes crackled and he readied himself to help Sam as needed, but something happened to his father in that moment and then hardened Yakuza thugs ran off. John looked at his father in surprise. "Papa," he murmured softly.

When Min turned around and saw how the man had cowed the Yakuza men, her jaw dropped a little. Just who was he? She turned around and slipped back to them, standing in front of them, her head tilted to the side as she looked up at him. Without saying a word, she went back into the alley and jerked her head, motioning for the two to follow her.

Sam stepped after her staying close behind, now that he wasn't running anymore he wasn't sure if he quite believed he'd finally found her. After so long he'd finally found his love and yet. As he'd suspected she was so young, and she didn't recognize him, he could tell by the way she looked at him. He was just some old man who'd chased after a pick pocket. Still, he'd stay by her, there was nothing else he could do.

John looked at his father, he'd never questioned Sam's judgement, but he wasn't sure following this urchin was a good idea. After all they didn't know her, she'd tried to help them he supposed, but she'd also tried to rob them. It didn't sit well. But what else could he do, he wasn't about to abandon his father and something seemed different. He'd never seen his father act this way, it was almost like he was a different man.

The little girl led them to the grate, and removed the iron monstrosity with a grunt. She motioned with a little hand to the both of them, looking at them with those wide, bottomless eyes. "They'll send more," she said softly, her voice a bit too grown up for such a small little girl. "But they won't think to look for you down here. C'mon." She jumped down the hole, waiting for them to join her. They would land in the sewer, though this part of it was dryer than one would think. It seemed this part of the sewer had been blocked off, though there was still the faint aroma of human excrement.

Sam jumped after her without a thought, he'd have leapt into the depths of hell if she'd asked him to, a sewer was nothing. John hesitated a moment more, he really wasn't sure he trusted this girl, and unappealing as annihilating a bunch of street thugs sounded he really didn't want to visit the Japanese sewer systems. But he wasn't about to separate from his father over that. He'd followed his father into worse after all. So with a long suffering sigh he leapt into the sewer, scrunching his nose at the smell.

"Hey," he said, "my Papa's wallet, give it back."

The young girl looked at the two men. When the younger of the two of them demanded she give the wallet back, her eyes narrowed and then in a very child-like manner, she stuck her tongue out at him and held the wallet close to her chest. "I don't want to. I'm helping you; I should get something out of the deal." She jerked her head. "C'mon, I'll lead you to a place where you can get out of here. Then maybe I'll give the wallet back." She gave them a cheeky grin and began to move forward.

"Something out of the- you just pantsed a group of viscous mobsters, do you think you're going to get by without help?" Sam put up a hand, silencing his son. Stepping forward he put a hand on the girl's shoulder.

"That sounds reasonable," he said, plucking the wallet from her hands and handing over the contents, "how's that? enough?" He smiled gently at the girl, patting her on the shoulder. "My son does have a point those three probably saw your face, it won't be safe for you in this city anymore."

The girl froze for a moment when Sam touched her shoulder. As he spoke, the shoulder under his hand shrugged indifferently. "It's never really been safe for me." Through the bravado, it was easy to see that the girl was now thinking of the consequences of her actions. She was shaking a bit. She swallowed and took the money. "C'mon, I'll show you the way out."

Sam smiled fondly at her, then he swallowed and stood, "Min," he called, "why don't you come with us?" He knew it was sudden, but there was no doubt in his mind that if he put it off she'd break away from them before he worked up the courage to ask, and he'd never be able to find her again, even if she did survive the yakuza who would be after her. It had to be now, there wouldn't be another chance. The worst she could do was say no, but if she did it would shatter his world for the second time.

Of anything that came from the man's mouth, nothing could have surprised her more. She just stared at him for a long moment. "Y-you know my name? H-how?" she whispered. "A-and come with you? I-I..." She suddenly felt overwhelmed by that same sense of familiarity that she had had before. She swallowed and opened her mouth to say something, but instead, she seemed to crumple to the ground.

"Min!" Sam shouted, rushing to her side and putting his hands on her shoulder, "are you okay what's wrong?" He examined her fussing like a mother hen. He swallowed she was so small, he had known she was a street child, but it was obvious she wasn't eating as much as a pick pocket of her caliber should have been.

John on the other hand seemed rooted to the spot, that was Min? The woman his father had spent so much time searching for, the woman he'd destroyed himself over? He didn't know what he had been expecting but certainly not some common pick pocket. Finally he went to his father, "her?"

"Yes," was all Sam said. The little girl lay there, barely conscious. She was bathed with a thin sheet of sweat and her skin had grown pale. As he checked her out, he'd find a spot of blood on her ragged clothing. It appeared she had been injured. What looked like a shallow stab wound on her right side was angry and red looking, most likely infected. And with not being able eat, and now this, she had been overwhelmed. She whimpered and shifted, looking up at Sam with glassy eyes.

"W-who are you?" she asked weakly.

Sam hugged her tightly, pressing his forehead to hers, "shh," he said, "don't talk, we're going to take care of you, okay? you're going to be fine." Even as he said so panic rose inside him, she was so sick, and in her malnourished state he wasn't sure how long she could last like this. "We have to get her out of her, and get her something to eat," he said, "now." He picked her up, and started running, "where's the nearest place where we can get out of here?"

Too sick and tired to argue with the man, Min raised a hand weakly, pointing down a dark tunnel. "T-there. It leads to a street outside the city." She was shivering and shaking in Sam's arms. He would feel how very thin she was, as if she were wasting away. "F-follow it about halfway. Th-there's a-a grate like the one we came down. And there's an inn not too far away." She began to cough violently, her slight frame shaking, then she lay limply in Sam's arms, her eyes fluttering closed.

He swallowed and started running, sprinting down the dark tunnel until he found the grate, pushing it open and casting about for the Inn. Spotting it he ran through the door. "Please," he said, "she's sick, we need a room and food." The man behind the counter looked at them.

"You can pay?"

"Yes! yes I can but please just hurry." He looked down at the girl in his arms as the inn keeper took his time about finding a key for them. Sam seized the key offered. "Chicken broth," he said, slapping down his money and running to the room he'd bought.

The room itself was fairly clean and held two beds. Min groaned and shifted, her slight body beginning to burn with fever. Her chest rose and fell raggedly and her heart galloped under her breast. The infection was taking its toll on her. It was amazing that she'd lasted as long as she had. John watched the girl and his father. He was torn. He hadn't expected this... but he knew if the girl died... his father might well do what he hadn't been able to do the first time he had lost Min.

"What can I do, Papa?" he asked.

"Go get some boiling water, I need to clean her wound," he laid her down on the bed and brushed the hair out of her face. He swallowed, she wasn't going to die, he wouldn't let her, she was going to survive this and then- and then he'd give her a good life. He knew things would never be the same between them. But still, he loved her, he was going to make sure she had a better childhood than she'd gotten her first time round.

John nodded and ran downstairs, demanding a kettle of boiled water. His fierce demeanor got a few results and before long, he was bounding back upstairs. "Here Papa," he said, pouring it into a basin he found in the bathroom. Then he stood back, watching. He hoped the girl pulled through, if for no other reason than he wanted to see the life come back into his father's eyes, the way it had when he first saw the girl.

The girl's breathing had become more ragged as she lay on the bed. The infection was ravaging her already weak body. If she survived the fever, she had a chance, but the odds of that seemed to decrease by the moment. She needed sustenance and her immune system was severely limited at the moment.

Sam peeled back her shirt and started to clean her wound, "go see about that broth," Sam said, "she needs protein." He swallowed and rested his hand on her cheek. "You can make it through," he whispered, "you were always so strong. And I- I need you to to get better, I won't make it if you don't."

Min's eyes opened briefly, their dark depths glassy and obscured by fever and pain. "W-who are you?" she whimpered softly. Even as ill as she was, that feeling of familiarity, and even more, a feeling of intimacy between the two wouldn't leave her alone. "I-I know... you," she whispered. "B-but how?" She grimaced and shifted as he cleaned the wound.

John returned a few moments later, carrying a bowl of broth. "Here Papa. Here's the broth for her. How is she?"

He swallowed, he wanted nothing more than to tell her everything, but he knew even if she believed him she wasn't the woman he once knew. There was no point in saying anything. "Not now," he said, helping her sit up as John came through the door, "eat," he said, taking the bowl and bringing a spoonful of the broth to her lips, smiling gently at her. "How do you feel?"

Too weak to resist, Min allowed Sam to help her sit up. This was very out of character for her, but rather than trying to make a break for it, she found she /wanted/ to be there with them... whoever they may be. She opened her mouth and let him spoon the broth in. It was like heaven on her tongue! The first taste of food in weeks. She sighed softly, her eyes closing for a moment. She wanted to take the bowl and just pour it down her throat, but she knew it would most likely make her sick, so she continued to let Sam feed her. "I-I'm ok," she said bravely. She realized the man actually seemed to care how she was.
